Solstice skill workshops well-received

Young and old enjoyed the Solstice Skills Share held Saturday, June 10 at the Frog Farm in Takilma.

The free activities, sponsored by Spiral Living Center, included horse-drawn wagon rides, basket-weaving, and draw-knife pole-peeling. There were workshops on beekeeping, trellising tomatoes and making compost tea.

John Roth from Oregon Caves National Monument discussed obsidian and serpentine rock, and percussion and pressure flaking methods of carving stone. Nearby, children tore paper, soaked it in water and poured the mixture into a blender, then mixed it with flowers and leaves to create unique stationary.

Deb Lukas gave a Frog Farm tour, home to Siskiyou Mountain Herbs and more than 100 species of medicinal plants. Dr. Margaret Philhower discussed homeopathic first aid remedies A-Z, many of which are prepared at the Frog Farm.

Evening entertainment included Illinois Valley String Band, storytelling with Tom Siewert, and an acoustic music band.
