'NATURAL BEAUTY’ CONTEST - Thursday, May 31 is the deadline for all K-12 students to enter the poster contest sponsored by Illinois Valley Soil & Water Conservation District. The theme is, “The Illinois Valley: A Collection of Natural Beauty.” Cash prizes and public recognition will result for two age levels: kindergarten through fifth-grade, and sixth through 12th.. Entries must be hand-drawn or painted on white paper with a minimum size of 8 ½-by-11 inches, and a maximum of 22-by-28 inches. Submissions must have the entrant’s name, address, age and grade level on the back, plus the entrant’s phone number and school name. Entries can be taken to the Josephine County Bldg. in Downtown Cave Junction, or school offices can phone 592-3731 for options.

NATUROPATHIC PEEK - An open house to celebrate the grand opening of Dr. Margaret Philhower’s Naturopathic Medical Clinic in “Downtown Takilma” will be held Saturday, June 2 from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be clinic tours, and organic refreshments; plus free weight, blood pressure, body fat percent, muscle mass, and hydration level testing. The clinic is in the Siskiyou Project building, at 9335 Takilma Road.

FEAT BY FEET - Chris Smith, manager of the SOFCU Community Credit Union office in Cave Junction, plans to walk the full 24 hours during the Saturday, June 2 Walk For Life in Grants Pass. Indications are that he will be the first to take the oval walk for 24 hours to benefit the American Cancer Society. He will be allowed restroom breaks, but will eat and drink while walking. Cheerleaders from Illinois Valley High School also will participate in the fund-raiser, with relays, so that some of them will be walking at all times.

FOUR-LEGGED POKER - Back Country Horsemen, Sourdough Chapter (S.W. Oregon) will hold its annual Poker Ride at Lake Selmac Horse Camp Saturday, June 9 with registration at 10 a.m.; first rider out at 11. Lunch at the horse camp is included in the entry fee. Contact Dick Butler at 597-4383.

LITTLE LEAGUE PLEA - Three All-Star team sponsors at $400 each are sought for Illinois Valley Little League. Games will start in mid-June. IT’S CAVE JUNCTION! - Three motorcycles and two horses were spotted parked and tethered, respectively, in front of Art’s Red Garter Saloon on Saturday afternoon, May 26. It was a street scene that to some observers typifies the valley spirit of old and new existing side-by-side.

FREE CONCERTS - “Jefferson” will kick off the annual Concerts in the Park series sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, June 14. KAREN BODEVING BOUQUET - “Accounting Technology” magazine highlights the CPA firm of Karen Bodeving in its June issue. Bodeving, a Cave Junction resident whose office is in Grants Pass, is well-known to many in Illinois Valley. She and one of her St. Bernard dogs are on the cover of the magazine. The article describes her process of going paperless and how it has improved her business. Besides her CPA practice, she and her husband raise St. Bernard dogs, and travel extensively to show them.
