Soup's on to benefit IVSHA

A soup dinner to benefit Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance (IVSHA) is scheduled for Saturday, April 21.

“Soup for the Souls,” featuring 17 different soups donated by local restaurants, will take place at Illinois Valley Senior Center at 520 E. River St. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

“This is the first year of what we hope to make a signature event for International Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is April,” said IVSHA Development Coordinator Iris Loewen.

The dinner also will include bread donated by Bagel Junction, Shop Smart Food Warehouse and other businesses and individuals.

Loewen said that a silent auction also will be part of the festivities, and will help raise money for a planned safe house. It will shelter women and children from abusive situations.

“We have some great auction items,” Loewen said. Draper Valley Vineyards has donated nonalcoholic wine for the occasion, and valley artists have donated ceramic bowls.

“You get to come in and pick out a ceramic bowl of your choice,” Loewen said. “People need to come early for the best bowls.”

Tickets are $15 for adults. Admission is free for children 10 and younger.

“We’re hoping it will be a nice family event,” Loewen said.
