Tales from the Police Blotter

* * *

Thursday, Sept. 28

*When a deputy checked the driver of a vehicle stopped at 12:20 a.m. in Downtown Cave Junction, he found a tired motorist.

*Three subjects (although subjects of what was not explained) were said to have been startled while attempting to steal items near a residence in Kerby around 2 a.m.

*A bicyclist wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt ducked into bushes on Watkins Street every time he drove by, a caller said at 2:43 a.m. The caller suspected the rider of casing Downtown CJ businesses.

*Shortly after 9:30 a.m. a woman said that a student was driving recklessly near Illinois Valley High School.

*Pulled over for an inoperable brake light on S. Caves Avenue at Lister Street, Jolene M. Hoffman, 22, was cited on charges of driving with a suspended license (DWS), and lack of insurance. The vehicle was impounded.

*Blancha Koci, 13, was cited at Lorna Byrne Middle School on a charge of possession of a controlled substance (PCS), marijuana, within 1,000 feet of a school

*Following a two-car, noninjury motor vehicle accident (MVA) on Redwood Hwy. near a construction zone on the south side of Cave Junction, Ryan Walker Dunham, 30, was cited to appear on a charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUII).

*While attending a party on Caves Hwy., a mother said, her son got into a fight and suffered a broken arm. She wanted it noted in case of future trouble.

*In the 27000 block of Redwood Hwy., a school bus driver reportedly decided not to drop children at a stop where four people with baseball bats were waiting in a vehicle. The complainant drove away and said that the other vehicle also left the area. The children eventually were dropped off and told to phone if the vehicle returned.

*From Redwood Hwy., a deputy pursued a reported stolen vehicle, occupied by two persons, up Finch Road to Tennessee Lookout Road and beyond. The male driver stopped to let out a woman, then drove away. She wasn’t located either. A report on felony eluding and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle was to follow. The vehicle was towed.

*Medical attention was not needed for a man sprawled in front of a Downtown CJ business at 6:31 p.m.

*On W. River Street an intoxicated bicyclist wearing all-black clothing fell and suffered a forehead laceration at 7:28 p.m. American Medical Response handled the call.

Friday, Sept. 29

*Someone broke into his tool shed and motor home in the 6000 block of Caves Hwy., a man reported.

*At 12:29 a.m. a deputy checked the area of the green bridge out Eight Dollar Road.

*At IVHS, a student was warned about his driving habits after a woman complained.

*Dalton Hill, 24, was cited near Lorna Byrne Middle School on a charge of VBR/violation of the basic rule (driving too fast for conditions) in a school zone.

*Theft of bank and fuel cards from a fanny pack in an unlocked car was reported on S. Kerby Avenue.

*Assistance was rendered a juvenile probation officer in Kerby because of a young person with an electronic monitoring device who ran away.

*On W. Lister Street, two motorists were warned for failure to obey a traffic control device.

*Two boys were the possible victims of harassment in the 27000 block of Redwood Hwy., and a school bus driver possibly could offer information.

*Five or six cows walked through her property on Hogue Drive, a woman said at 6:47 p.m.

*Following a report of an assault on Laurel Road at 9 p.m., Michael Cady Cotton, 46, was taken to county jail on a charge of fourth-degree assault.

*Gunshots were reported at 10:43 p.m. in the area of O’Brien Road.

*Jubilee Park was checked at 11:07 p.m.

*Illinois River “Forks” State Park was checked at 11:09 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 30

*Despite two audible alarms at Z Coffee at 1:17 a.m., nothing seemed amiss.

*Extra patrol was noted at 1:58 a.m. in the 30000 block of Redwood Hwy., and at 2:59 a.m. at the Eight Dollar green bridge.

*Today and during other days in this report, a number of motorists were warned for various bad stuff like driving too fast, having expired registration and not stopping for “Stop” signs or red traffic lights. Also for having bad equipment (on their vehicles).

*David R. Ruiz-Tagle, 37, was cited in Kerby on a charge of driving 42 mph in a 30 mph zone.

*Paperwork reported stolen from a Century 21 office was located near the Kerby Transfer Station.

*There was a complaint from a woman that people were poaching inside the Rough & Ready Lumber Co. mill site. She was worried that birds would be killed, noting that they’re all she has to live for.

*Cindy Lou Talbot, 35, was cited at Six Mile Campground on a charge of failure to pay a camping fee.

*In CJ, a complainant said that her stolen car had been returned by her (apparently) ex-husband, and that she didn’t want to pursue charges.

*David James Waddell, 24, was taken to jail on a charge of fourth-degree assault/domestic following an incident on W. Lister Street.

*Some sort of “suspicious” incident was reported on Honeybee Lane.

*Because of what were termed harassing phone calls, a woman wanted her daughter’s ex-boyfriend warned to stop it.

*Criminal mischief to a vehicle in the 24000 block of Redwood Hwy. was found to have occurred previously; not this evening.

*An audible alarm in the 6000 block of Holland Loop was canceled.

Sunday, Oct. 1

*Four Cave Junction locations were checked in the wee hours, but neither punks, thugs nor illegal activities were noted.

*A deputy wanted a Logan Cut resident cited for failing to register as a sex offender.

*Mutual combat resulted in no charges at 2:08 a.m. on Watkins Street involving a large group from a bar watching two guys fight.

*On White Schoolhouse Road at 8:46 a.m. a man reported gunshots and thought one had stuck his residence, but such was not the case.

*Louis G. Coffey, 34, was cited on a charge of no driver license in CJ.

*An O’Brien resident was advised how to proceed after receiving numerous hang-up calls from a CJ address.

*Israel J. Hopper, 23, was cited on a charge of illegal parking in Jubilee Park at 11:57 a.m.

*In Downtown CJ, Gary M. Phillips, 54, was cited on a DWS charge. He had been reported as a missing person. His vehicle was impounded.

*A mother was going to handle the situation after young children dialed 911 twice from a CJ residence.

*There was an accidental alarm at Lorna Byrne Middle School at 5:31 p.m.

*In CJ a woman complained that a vehicle lacked a front license plate.

*A woman wearing a pink sweater (other clothing not described) was at a CJ restaurant wanting to talk to a deputy because, she said, someone was trying to kidnap her. Then she left.

Monday, Oct. 2

*A radio played loudly and a hostile person were noted in 12:32 a.m. complaint from Honeybee Lane.

*There was no apparent problem at a CJ restaurant in connection with a 12:49 a.m. alarm.

*“Forks” Park was checked at 2:26 a.m.

*A deer was struck by a car at Holland Loop and Takilma Road, a man said, for insurance purposes, at 8:48 a.m.

*Kati Marie Johnston, 20, was cited in Downtown CJ on charges of DWS, driving uninsured, and failure to carry registration. Her vehicle was impounded.

*Vehicular hit-and-run was reported on a CJ business parking lot.

*Alan Jon Fry, 39, was cited in Kerby on charges of no driver license and driving uninsured.

*Also in Kerby, Darren Len Quibell, 45, was cited on a charge of driving without insurance. He was warned for not having a driver license and failure to register his vehicle in Oregon.

*A 3-year-old child dialed 911 from N. Old Stage Road. The mother had the call-taker counsel him.

*Nasty types cut a lock at Lake Selmac and stole a county-owned leaf blower and a can of gasoline with a total value of $275.

*Someone thought that maybe someone else in a car in the 5000 block of Takilma Road fired a gunshot.

*Costume jewelry in a bowl was found somewhere in Cave Junction.

*In the 8000 block of Takilma Road, Terry Michael Kuisis, 36, was taken to jail under a no-bail warrant from Humboldt County, Calif. charging failure to appear (FTA) on a charge of felony burglary.

Tuesday, Oct. 3

*At 1:14 a.m. and 2:57 a.m., loud music and a hostile person again were reported on Honeybee Lane.

*Jubilee Park was checked at 3:29 a.m., and River Street at N. Hussey Avenue at 3:34 a.m.

*An Illinois Valley woman reported that her runaway niece from California was staying with her.

*In trying to steal her vehicle from the 6000 block of Caves Hwy., a woman said, a lowlife broke a window and damaged the steering column.

*Extra patrol was logged at 10:13 a.m. at Jubilee Park.

*Cathleen A. Schmit, 58, was arrested near a CJ bar under a warrant charging probation violation/possession of a controlled substance. And she was cited on charges of DWS and driving uninsured. Her vehicle was impounded.

*Possible poachers were reported in the 4000 block of Deer Creek Road.

*Jeremiah Scot Horn, 30, was cited in CJ under a warrant charging FTA on a charge of fourth-degree assault; and on a charge of DWS. His vehicle was impounded.

*In CJ, Terrance M. Lankford, 61, was cited on charges of DWS and failure to carry proof of insurance. His vehicle was impounded.

*A man was “trespassed” from I.V. Family Resource Center.

*Neilia Beth Pierson, 53, was arrested at a CJ business under warrants charging FTA on charges of menacing, second- and third-degree theft, fourth-degree assault, criminal trespass, contempt of court, and third-degree robbery.

*A woman was warned at a CJ business about drinking in public.

*Walter D. Day, 53, was cited on a DWS charge in CJ. His vehicle was impounded.

*Five or six “transients” drinking beer on S. Hussey Avenue were gone when a deputy checked.

*Dean M. Smith 42, was cited behind a CJ business on charges of DWS and failure to carry current proof of insurance. His vehicle was not impounded because he had his elderly mother with him.

*Some $300 worth of copper wire was reported stolen from two homes under construction on Cabernet Drive.

*City of Cave Junction employees and those from a portable toilet company cleaned up spilled raw sewage in CJ after one of the potties did a flip.

*Mark Elliott Dildine, 45, was cited in O’Brien under a warrant charging FTA on charges of DUII, reckless driving, and failure to carry and present a driver license.

*A Lakeshore Drive resident claims that school bus drivers are going 50 to 70 mph.

*Theft of medical marijuana plants was reported on Logan Cut Drive.

*Although a man called 911 from the 6000 block of Westside Road, claiming that people were chasing him, the report was termed unfounded.

Wednesday, Oct. 4

*Possible prowlers were reported at 2:20 a.m. on Pinewood Way.

*Darla B. Howell, 37, was cited on a charge of speeding at E. River Street and Shadowbrook Drive. So was Mark W. Atwood, 44.

*The aroma of marijuana was coming from a van at I.V. Family Resource Center, and it was thought that maybe some selling was occurring. The people were told to move on.

*Cedric Michael Sawall, 48, was cited in CJ on a DWS charge.

*Tami Ellen Duhaime, 47, was cited in CJ on charges of DWS, no insurance and expired registration. The vehicle was impounded.

*The vehicle driven by Matthew Lee Reiman, 34, was impounded after he was cited on charges of driving 59 mph in a 45 zone, and not having insurance at Redwood Hwy. and Laurel Road.

*Possible burglary was reported on Logan Cut Drive after someone used a sledge hammer on a shop door.

*After a vehicle was left for 24 hours in the 100 block of Caves Hwy., a note was left about not camping in city limits.

*People had a verbal disturbance in the 32000 block of Redwood Hwy. They were told to stay in their own areas.

*Third-degree theft was reported at a CJ bar.

*Harassment said to involve a civil matter was reported on Forest Creek Road.
