Tales from the Police Blotter

* * *

Thursday, Sept. 21

*“People are going to wonder why I built a nuclear bomb and blew up Cave Junction and everyone in it,” a man reportedly said after he was denied “benefits” at Illinois Valley Family Resource Center. The complainant wanted the man warned about his behavior.

*Someone in a white T-shirt, trespassing at the Kerby Transfer Station, was startled by a sanitation driver and fled through a hole in a fence around 4:40 p.m.

*Other than for church services on Sunday, a man found residing in the entry way at Immanuel United Methodist Church was warned to not trespass there.

*Stating his belief that a Cave Junction store stole from him, an uncooperative customer refused to leave when asked to around 7:30 p.m. He waited for a deputy to arrive, at which time Cory Edward Johnson, 34, was arrested on a warrant charging failure to appear (FTA) on charges of vehicle theft, and DUII/test refusal.

*One of two men who drove away from the Ray’s Food Place parking lot in Selma announced, loudly, “I just killed the (expletive deleted) chicken!” Apparently, he had done so by ripping the animal’s head off, which had been left on the parking lot. The caller, awaiting a deputy’s advise, had not yet thrown away the head.

*A woman wanted to report damage to her vehicle that she believed happened while parked at a Cave Junction business, but upon reflection decided that she may have caused the damage herself.

Friday, Sept. 22

*No reason was discovered for a residential alarm in the 22000 block of Redwood Hwy. at 4:27 a.m.

*In the 13000 block of Caves Hwy., John Michael Bermel, 64, was cited on federal charges of illegally occupying a mining claim.

*A man at a CJ business was told that his debit transactions had not been successful when, according to his records, they had. He claimed the store owed him money, and he was told it was a banking issue, and advised of his options.

*Entry and theft of cash from a business in the 27000 block of Redwood Hwy. was reported at 11 a.m.

*Three young men at Illinois Valley High School, who admitted to being under the influence of marijuana, were counseled regarding the use of controlled substances.

*A man in his late 40s was seen stepping into traffic on Redwood Hwy. near Illinois River Road at 2:16 p.m. When contacted he said he’d stay off the roadway, and was determined not to be a threat to himself or others.

*Some 14 marijuana plants were reported stolen from a medical cannabis garden on Dick George Road, a man said.

*On Junction Avenue, a woman said that someone came to her door and offered to sell her jewelry. The resident recognized the jewelry as her own, which she was unaware had been stolen.

*Awakened and told to remove himself and his belongings from a storage shed near the Cave Junction Library, a 49-year-old man reportedly threatened to kill the responding deputy, who keeps having to remove him from different places for trespassing.

*Just before 9 p.m., a jam session at the open air stage at Jubilee Park was broken up.

Saturday, Sept. 23

*At Western Plaza, a man said that a woman swerved toward him in her vehicle as he walked on the parking lot. She was also yelling derogatory remarks, he said, and still yelling when she entered the restaurant he was in, but she was told to leave.

*On N. Sawyer Avenue, Zackary Wayne Reyes, 17, was cited on charges of expired tags, driving with a suspended license (DWS), failure to carry proof of insurance, and failure to carry registration.

*His stolen property was located at a CJ business, a man reported.

*On Redwood Hwy. at Laurel Road, David Tripp Nelson, 22, was cited on charges of obstructed windows, DWS, and failure to carry registration and proof of insurance. His vehicle was impounded.

*Lori Diane McGovern, 46, was cited on a charge of violation of the basic rule (VBR), driving too fast for road conditions.

Sunday, Sept. 24

*Some joker threw a rock through a public telephone booth in Selma, a caller said, shattering glass.

*In the 5000 block of Takilma Road an orange van was parked alongside the road, partially blocking a driveway. The caller believed someone was sleeping inside.

*The aforementioned vehicle was tagged to be towed away.

*A stolen pickup truck was recovered from a location on Bear Creek Road.

*Highly intoxicated, a man was causing a disturbance on Reeves Creek Road. He was discovered to have an outstanding warrant from Jackson County, so he was extradited.

Monday, Sept. 25

*Several weeks ago, a man with a clipboard arrived at a Crooks Creek Road residence looking for “Charlie Thompson.” The homeowner, who stated he’d lived there for 20 years, did not know the person they were looking for. Since that visit, the home owner said, he’s been receiving mail for “Charlie Thompson.” He was told to contact consumer reporting companies.

*A vehicle reported stolen from Selma was traced with a device as it moved through Cave Junction and on to California. CHP was notified of the stolen vehicle’s travels.

*On Lakeshore Drive, a man was seen shooting at his own home in what a neighbor deemed to be a “reckless manner.”

Tuesday, Sept. 26

*Not far from where it was stolen, an old pickup truck ran out of fuel, and was abandoned. It was returned this morning.

*Two employees were terminated for “fighting and feuding,” a Cave Junction businessman said. Both were warned not to trespass at the business.

*When checking on a reportedly abandoned vehicle on S. Hussey Avenue, the owner was contacted, who advised that she would move the vehicle.

*A 20-year-old driver was warned for speed racing on W. River Street at 1 p.m.

*Her debit card was stolen from her purse, a Selma woman reported.

*On Draper Valley Road, a woman said that someone from whom she’s buying a home was behaving belligerently and irrationally.

*Michael C. Cotton, 46, was cited on a charge of failure to appear on a DWS charge.

*Someone had been attempting to alter the course of Deer Creek with heavy equipment, a caller said. They were told to contact DEQ.

*A gunshot or backfire was heard in the 700 block of Caves Hwy. at 8 p.m.

*A young man who apparently had been hitch-hiking, had been assaulted and then dumped on the side of a road, said a caller in Selma. The victim was unwilling to pursue charges.

Wednesday, Sept. 27

*Gunshots and barking dogs were near Robinson Corner Road at 3:55 a.m.

*Someone attempted to enter a Kerby business, causing some $50 damage to the door.

*Tracie Nicole Losey, 15, was transported to the Juvenile Justice Center in Grants Pass after she was cited at Illinois Valley High School on a charge of PCS within 1,000 feet of a school.

*Carla M. Bundy, 29, was cited on charges of speeding and driving uninsured on E. River Street at 10:43 a.m.

*In the 400 block of S. Redwood Hwy. a man was warned for conducting business (selling firewood) within Cave Junction city limits without a license.

*Robert A. Hurt, 52, was cited on a charge of speeding on E. River Street at 12:14 p.m.

*On Schumacher Street at Kerby Avenue, Corey R. General, 26, was cited on charges of lack of sufficient fenders, DWS, and lack of insurance at 1:21 p.m.

*Two men and one woman were reportedly drinking beer on S. Hussey Avenue at 1:39 p.m. One person was contacted and warned regarding trespassing.

*Though she was willing to contact her neighbor to work out any misunderstanding about the property line, a Lakeshore Drive resident wanted it noted that her neighbors had cut four of her trees.

*At quarter to 4 p.m. a blood-stained vehicle on S. Hussey Avenue was made note of.

*Swerving to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the 100 block of N. Redwood Hwy., Ronald Lee Johnson, 58, reportedly wrecked his motorcycle and was subsequently cited to appear in Cave Junction Municipal Court on a charge of failure to carry motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license.

*This morning her niece left with a duffle bag and has failed to return, said a woman in Kerby at 7:10 p.m. The girl was listed as a runaway.

*Leslie Ray Jansson, 49, was cited on a warrant charging failure to appear on a charge of disorderly conduct. He was contacted at the Cave Junction 76 gas station.

*After he was arrested, a man said, he gave his key ring to a woman who may yet have the key to his vehicle, which is no longer where he’d parked it on S. Kerby Avenue. Before a deputy could become involved, a compromise was reached.
