Tales from the Police Blotter

* * *

Friday, Aug. 18

*Following two 11:15 p.m. reports of bullets whizzing past, including one caller who said they struck her home, the suspect was identified as a intoxicated man who is “extremely hostile” to law enforcement.

Saturday, Aug. 19

*Three or four people were said to be physically fighting and “out of hand,” outside a Cave Junction bar at 1:51 a.m. while another 40-odd persons reportedly stood and watched. All parties left the scene just prior to the arrival of a deputy.

*A former employee was suspected of having broken into a travel trailer in the 13000 block of Caves Hwy., a man said.

*Richard C. Ashbaugh, 24, was lodged in Josephine County Jail under a detainer by a parole officer, after he was found in possession of a “large amount” of alcohol among a group of minors in the 8000 block of Illinois River Road at 11:30 a.m.

*Among those cited on charges of failure to maintain a lane today on Illinois River Road: Dallas Alan Smith, 28; Howard William James III, 23; James G. Byrd, 52; Charles A. Blood, 21; Rael C. Hirning, 25; Patrick L. Dolan, 28; and Joshua C. Tilley, 20 (also cited on a charge of failure to wear a seatbelt).

*Gary Neal Bluhm, 56, was cited for failure to wear a seatbelt on Illinois River Road in the 4000 block.

*Subsequent to a traffic stop, Bryan Michael Wiedeman, 20, was apprehended on warrants charging failure to appear (FTA) on original charges of interfering with a peace officer, and second-degree criminal trespassing. He was lodged in county jail.

*Damage to a gate and garden statue was reported at a Downtown CJ business.

*David James Parker, 47, was cited by a forest service lawman on a charge of “residing” at the Illinois Valley Ranger District compound on Redwood Hwy.

*Antoine C. Hess, 51, was cited on a charge of failure to wear a seat belt on Illinois Valley Road at 5:17 p.m.

*On W. Stevenson Street, a property owner was concerned that person riding dirt bikes on the property adjacent to his might constitute a fire hazard. The riders were contacted, and said that they would no longer ride there.

*While attending a party on Hogue Drive the night before, an 18-year-old man said, he became intoxicated and other people were accusing him of sexually harassing a 21-year-old woman. He was in fear of his life, he said, adding that the accusers had hung posters stating that he was a molester “from Selma to CJ.”

*Six persons were warned for trespassing in the 200 block of W. Stevenson Street and given 24 hours to vacate the premises.

*A “very loud barking dog” was annoying neighbors in the 4000 block of Takilma Road at 11:30 p.m.

Sunday, Aug. 20

*In the wee hours of the morning, extra patrol was conducted at Kerbyville Museum, Jubilee Park, and O’Brien Country Store.

*In the 29000 block of Redwood Hwy. at 12:08 p.m. Karen R. Harling, 53, was cited on a charge of speeding (64 in a 45 mph zone).

*JeanPaul Henri Mazaud, 54, was cited on charges of speeding (66 in a 45 mph zone), and unlawful passing on Redwood Hwy. in the 29000 block.

*Near milepost 40 of Redwood Hwy. at 217 p.m. a tire came off a trailer, striking another vehicle and damaging it badly.

Monday, Aug. 21

*Just after 9 a.m. music that could be heard over the noise of construction equipment in the 9000 block of Takilma Road was complained about.

*Jeff S. Weaver, 44, was cited on Redwood Hwy. at Rockydale Road on a charge of speeding ( 60 in a 45 mph zone), and warned for failure to carry and present a license.

*While camping in the area of Rough & Ready Creek Road, a man said, his sleeping bag, camp stove and ice chest were stolen, plus various prescription meds.

*Benjamin D. Metts, 75, was cited on a charge of speeding (73 in a 55 mph zone), on Redwood Hwy. at Eight Dollar Mountain Road at 11:37 a.m.

*An apparently abandoned automobile was impounded from near Seats Dam at 2:26 p.m.

*A man on Greenview Drive said that his credit card had been used without his permission, which he was reporting for reimbursement purposes.

*A caller complained that a woman had been yelling and attempting to drive over him or her while at Jubilee Park.

*Three women in Jubilee Park around 5 p.m. were said to be yelling at passing vehicles and attempting to provoke fights.

*Reportedly suicidal, a 58-year-old man at Caves Creek Campground was taken into custody on a peace officer’s mental hold and taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital.

*A woman in Selma said that she was followed around by a person who left when she entered an establishment from which the other is barred.

*In rural Cave Junction a woman reported that after allowing a man and his son to live with her, they would not return her car keys or cell phone, and that she was threatened. She was given advice on how to proceed.

Tuesday, Aug. 22

*In O’Brien at 2:01 a.m. a woman wanting to “vent” was crying hysterically over her job loss. And she had been drinking, and wanted to drive her car or die.

*A short man with thick hair was harassing her, a woman said at 2:02 a.m. in the 5000 block of Takilma Road.

*After a report of highly intoxicated persons screaming and yelling in the 6000 block of Caves Hwy. at 3:14 a.m., Shannon R. Loock, 17, was arrested on a charge of curfew violation and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center in Grants Pass. Amber R. Griffin, 17, also was lodged, charged with resisting arrest, assault on a public safety officer, curfew violation, being a minor in possession of alcohol, and driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUII).

*At 3:53 a.m., six persons described as teen-agers were shining flashlights through the front windows of Downtown CJ businesses. A deputy was unable to locate them.

*Gary Rodrigues, 49, again was “trespassed” from Shop Smart Food Warehouse, and cited on a charge of second-degree trespass.

*Said to have heavy damage and partially blocking the road at Hogue and Lakeshore drives, a vehicle was towed.

*At 10:39 a.m., four persons in Jubilee Park, ages 22, 24, 29 and 31, were issued 30-day trespass notices to stay out of the park, and warned about the law prohibiting alcohol there.

*Possible criminal activity at a McMullen Creek Road residence was to be turned over to Grants Pass Police and Oregon Dept. of Human Services.

*Two unsupervised boys 10 to 12 years old were reported driving fast on Rockydale Road near Redwood Hwy. in a white golf cart and a yellow go-kart.

*Subsequent to theft at a Downtown CJ business of a $350 bicycle, which was recovered, Gary Rodrigues, 49, was taken to county jail on a charge of second-degree theft.

*Loss of a cell phone in the 23000 block of Redwood Hwy. was reported.

*A wounded bear was reported near milepost 23 of Redwood Hwy. It was not known if he had the cell phone.

*County Public Works was to take care of a downed “Stop” sign at Rockydale and Waldo roads.

*At 5:55 p.m. a man said that a motorist drove onto a CJ parking lot, vomited into a bag, and then “took off,” nearly hitting two other vehicles.

*While a woman was picking blackberries at McMullen Creek and Three Mill roads, and had her dog with her, she said that a man swerved his car toward them and yelled, “Your dog is out.” She called it a continuing problem.

Wednesday, Aug. 23

*After ordering $40 worth of food in a CJ restaurant, a customer refused to pay and wouldn’t leave. Then the problem was taken care of, although no detail was provided.

*Home owner error caused an alarm in the 300 block of Caves Hwy.

*Subsequent to a complaint that a man drove 80 mph at River Valley Mobile Home Park and then left 150 feet of skid marks, the driver said he had experienced mechanical problems. His switched license plates were seized, and he was warned about his driving status.

*Approximately $100 worth of gasoline was reported stolen from U-Haul trucks at Robbie’s Auto Care Center in CJ.

*At the I.V. Substation, Marshall B. Elliott, 20, was cited to appear under a warrant charging FTA on a charge of driving while suspended (DWS), failure to perform the duties of a driver, and second-degree criminal mischief.

*ODOT was notified of a large truck tire retread on Redwood Hwy. near Kerby.

*Someone (unclear who of three persons involved) was cited at Redwood Hwy. and Pugetville Road on charges of no license, driving uninsured, and failure to carry and present a driver license. The vehicle was impounded.

*Some sort of landlord problem, including a woman who said she had a fat lip from being assaulted, was reported on Happy Camp Road where “all parties are hostile toward law enforcement.”

*It was reported that a dog killed a deer on Hogue Drive.

*Possible deer poachers were reported in the area of Ollis Road at 8 p.m.

*A woman said that others drove by and shot at her on Caves Hwy. She had a “pea-sized abrasion” on one arm.

*Burglary and ransacking was reported at a vacant house in the 6000 block of Rockydale Road.

*Burglary involving $2,000 cash ($1 bills were left behind), and ransacking to a locked home was reported in the 7000 block of Takilma Road. It appeared that a door had been “jimmied.”

*William W. Bailey, 51, was cited on a charge of second-degree criminal trespass on N. Sawyer Avenue.

*Theft of guns sometime during the past nine months was reported in the 4000 block of Caves Hwy.

*There was concern because a registered sex offender no longer on probation was living on forest service land in Takilma near children.

*Timothy Roy Wilcox, 24, was cited on a charge of DWS in CJ after being stopped for riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. The bike was impounded.

*In CJ, Alan Carl Penna, 35, was arrested under a Kansas warrant charging FTA on a charge of possession of marijuana. His vehicle was impounded.

*Someone claimed that they received a phone call from a man out Caves Hwy., who said he had slashed his wrists and was driving himself for medical care. He wasn’t located.

*Gunfire from “an automatic weapon” was reported on Lone Mountain Road at 1:26 p.m.

*No crime was detected in connection with a reported disturbance in Kerby at 8:25 p.m.

*A couple in Kerby had a disturbance at 8:41 p.m.
