Tales from the Police Blotter

* * *

Monday, June 12

*In violation of the basic rule (VBR/driving too fast for conditions), Xavier James Michael Medina, 18, was so cited on Hwy. 199 at Deer Creek Road just after 6 a.m.

*Contacted in the 4000 block of Happy Camp Road, Elizabeth Ann Matthews, 42, was cited to appear on a charge of failure to appear (FTA) on a charge of second-degree criminal mischief.

*Some 80 feet of copper wire valued at $200 was reported missing from a home construction site on Noah’s Way off S. Old Stage Road.

*Two solar panels, valued at $200 apiece, were reported taken from the gate of an Ollis Road residence.

*Stopped on Caves Hwy. at Old Stage Road because of expired tags, Bryan James French, 29, was cited on charges of driving with a suspended license (DWS), and driving without insurance. His vehicle was impounded.

*Cited in Downtown Cave Junction on charges of DWS and driving uninsured, David Wayne Easterly, 43, also was warned for failure to signal a lane change, and his vehicle was impounded.

*Due to harassment claimed on the part of his new girlfriend, a woman sought assistance retrieving her belongings from her former boyfriend’s house on Reagor Lane.

*Patrick J. Cromwell, 24, was cited on a charge of failure to carry an operator’s permit in the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy. at 2 p.m.

*Wesley A. Propps, 41, was arrested on warrants from Grants Pass and Eagle Point charging contempt of court, and FTA on an original charge of failure to carry proof of insurance. He also was cited on S. Redwood Hwy. on charges of DWS, and lack of insurance.

*Several piles of scrap metal and copper were reported taken from a property listed as a former drug lab site being cleaned up in the 37000 block of Hwy. 199.

*James Bruce Rankin, 51, was cited on charges of DWS and driving uninsured on S. Hussey Avenue at W. Watkins Street at 4:17 p.m. His vehicle was impounded.

*With a single round, a baby deer which had been injured by a car in the 1000 block of Deer Creek Road was dispatched. Wildlife Images was notified.

*A Kerby couple said that they were working things out, following a verbal altercation in which one person “overreacted,” phoned 911 and then hung up at 8:30 p.m.

*Three intoxicated men in a red pickup truck were said leaving Kerby, headed for Grants Pass at 8:38 p.m.

*While she was sitting in her car eating lunch in Downtown CJ a man squirted her in the ear with a water gun, causing her to spill her coffee, a woman complained at 4 p.m. Deputies were to follow up on a report of disorderly conduct.

*Yelling obscenities, panhandling, and bothering customers, a man had been loitering in front of a CJ business all day and refusing to leave, the proprietor said.

*The irate neighbor of a transient camp on W. Stevenson Street requested that a deputy have them move on. One man was contacted on scene, and was advised to relocate to an approved camping facility.

Tuesday, June 13

*A man reported that somebody ran into his vehicle, which was parked in the 200 block of N. Redwood Hwy., leaving behind dents, scratches and yellow and white paint, but no information about themselves.

*Two people contacted in the 4000 block of Happy Camp Road admitted to having shoved to the ground a woman who then phoned for assistance to have them evicted, which the deputy declined to do.

*An intoxicated man was sleeping on a parking space in front of First Love Christian Fellowship. At 2 p.m. he agreed to move on.

*Fourth-degree assault was being investigated in the matter of renters on Happy Camp Road who were fighting again.

*When a Hathaway Drive woman asked that an FBI agent respond to investigate the mysterious extraction of her dog’s tooth, she was informed that 911 call-takers do not dispatch for the FBI. The deputy who did respond advised the woman of her options.

*Three under-aged men in a brown pickup truck were said to be swilling Budweiser and throwing beer cans around at Lake Selmac just after 8 p.m. They could not be located when a deputy responded.

*Having received a flurry of harassing, obscenity-laden phone calls at work, a woman in Downtown CJ asked that the caller be told to stop it.

Wednesday, June 14

*In the wee morning hours area patrol occurred at Illinois River “Forks” State Park, and at Jubilee Park, where it was discovered that some yo-yo had run his vehicle into a small section of fence near the north gate. Also, baseball field lights had been left on all night.

*Following a noninjury MVA with a garbage truck on Ollis Road at 7:20 a.m., Michael R. Calvin, was cited on a charge of driving without insurance, and his van was towed.

*An employee of Illinois Valley Fire District reported theft of a hand-held radio valued at $600.

*A dark-haired and bearded man, carrying a duffle bag, was seen going through mailboxes on Draper Valley Road at 11 a.m., but he could not be located.

*Adrian M. Vanloo, 37, was cited on charges of obstruction of governmental administration, and second-degree trespassing after he was detained and initially refused to provide his name at a CJ store at 12:38 p.m.

*A white Daewoo, parked at Lorna Byrne Middle School for the past week, was said to have “an odor” coming from the trunk. The vehicle was found to have nothing suspicious, and school personnel were told if they wanted it moved, they would have to remove it.

*A deputy attempted to contact a man on W. River Street to inform him that his stolen vehicle had been recovered in California, but he didn’t appear to reside there.

*Stopped for having “very bad visibility,” due to a nontransparent mat covering the vehicle’s windows, Virginia E. Childress, 38, was subsequently cited on a charge of driving without a license.

*“Upset” that his neighbors had parked a motorhome on a shared road, a man on Three Mill Road embarked on reported harassment. It included screaming, yelling, revving a chainsaw, and shooting into the RV in which the neighbor’s father-in-law was staying. Deputies responded, and after he was “Tazered,” Edward A, White, 61, was cited on charges of menacing, interfering and resisting arrest. He also was told not to trespass.

*Anthony Grebisz, 45, was cited on N. Redwood Hwy. on charges of DWS and driving uninsured just after 4 p.m., and his vehicle was impounded.

*Following a tip, a deputy contacted some boys in a Kerby neighborhood who expected “to be on the receiving end of a knock-down, drag-out fight” that evening. The boys were told to contact law enforcement if anyone showed up trying to start a fight.

Thursday, June 15

*At 2:30 a.m., a garbage-filled abandoned vehicle was noted on Reeves Creek Road. Due to it being full of trash, it was left there.

*In Kerby a 2-year-old had the phone taken from him after making a 911 hang-up call at 8 p.m.

*A man was seen to slap a woman as they walked down Josephine Street with a young boy. They could not be located.

*Neither could a young woman dressed in all black who was said to lying in the roadway on Kerby Street at 8:35 p.m.

Friday, June 16

*At 2:46 a.m. a prowler was heard trying doorknobs in the 500 block of Schumacher Street. Within an hour of the call, patrol was conducted in the vicinity and all deemed secure.

*Contacted in the 4500 block of Caves Hwy., John Michael Bermel, 63, was cited to appear on a charge of FTA on an original charge of driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUII). He also was given 30 days to vacate BLM land.

*Some $1,000 damage occurred when vandals struck a house on Westside Drive, a man reported.

*On Norman Road a man reported theft of a computer from a locked shed.

*The person who stole his puppy was currently at Jubilee Park with it, a man said at 3 p.m., and he wanted some assistance getting it back.

*Several drivers were cited on charges of failure to maintain a lane on Illinois River Road, a summer afternoon ritual for many.

*While on Illinois River Road, a deputy twice attempted to stop an ATV driver who eluded him.

Saturday, June 17

*Two people sitting in a “multicolored but mostly yellow” pickup truck on Mesa Verde Drive prompted a concerned call at 10 a.m.

*Evidently very familiar with off-road trails, a helmetless dirt bike rider in Selma eluded capture around 1:30 p.m.

*Daniel Arthur Shinerock, 39, was cited on charges of driving uninsured and failure to maintain a lane on Illinois River Road at 2:36 p.m.

*As a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Illinois River Road, Scott Edward Beach, 56, was cited for failure to wear a seat belt.

*Aaron Joel Lumen, 22, was cited on charges of failure to maintain a lane (which seems to be a tricky thing to do well in the 4000 block of Illinois River Road), and warned for having inadequate fenders.

*Brian Edward Sauerland, 37, was cited on a charge of failure to maintain a lane and warned for driving uninsured on Illinois River Road at 3:40 p.m.

*Guess where, in separate incidents, Eugene Blaine Starr, 60; and Colby Ray Nichols, 18, were cited on charges of failure to wear seat belts this afternoon.

*A man against whom she has a no –contact order was on the property, said a woman on Norman Road at 4:40 p.m. What began as a verbal altercation escalated as he began throwing things through the windows. Subsequently, Michael Scott Tice, 52, was taken to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass on a peace officer’s mental hold.

*A couple more drivers were warned for failure to maintain a lane of travel on Illinois River Road.

*Samuel Quintana, 58, was cited on charges of DUII, DWS and driving uninsured on Lakeshore Drive just after 10 p.m. His vehicle was impounded, and three dogs were taken into custody.

Sunday, June 18

*No logs for today.

Monday, June 19

*A wing-window was broken out of a dump truck at a construction site in the 25000 block of Hwy. 199, a caller said at 9 a.m.

*Someone tagged the back of Ray’s Food Place in Selma, causing $45 worth of rattle-can damage.

*Originally upset because a black Subaru had been left on private property under the bridge on Finch Road, a man later phoned to say that there were people there whom he was sure were doing drugs, and he wanted a deputy to charge them with trespassing. They left, abandoning a red Honda. The complainant was advised of his options regarding the car.

*In the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy., a woman in the company of several men was said to have removed her top and bra, but she could not be located when a deputy arrived.

*Though a man claimed to have been assaulted, beaten and a knife pulled on him on W. Watkins Street, it was determined that he’d been in mutual combat with another person who owed him money.

*Screaming was heard coming from the woods “behind the glass shop” in the 25000 block of Redwood Hwy.

*A man seated in a vehicle on Hathaway Drive at Glendon Road said he was just sitting in the shade but the caller suspected he was actually casing the neighborhood.

*Two boys in Kerby were advised to stay away from each other after a spate of mutual combat in which one threw a folded Swiss Army knife at the other.

Tuesday, June 20

*Overnight some jerk stole a cooler filled with drinks and food from a camper at Lake Selmac.

*A trio of jerks was caught on videotape ripping off the cash box from CJ 76 gas station’s car wash, netting themselves about $100 while causing some $2,000 damage, the manager reported.

*On Rockydale Road in the 2000 block, some jerk evidently damaged a mailbox, necessitating an estimated $50 in repairs.

*Contacted at Jubilee Park, Timothy Alan Rosa, 46, was cited on a charge of DWS, and his vehicle was impounded.

*Mary Louise Dove, 64, was cited on a charge of first-degree forgery and taken to county jail.

*Two teen-aged boys were said to be scuffling in the 100 block of N. Redwood Hwy. at 3 p.m., but after someone broke up the pair, they rode off in different directions on their bikes.

*A thief with a thing for yard ornamentation struck an Ollis Road neighborhood, making off with: assorted yard decorations, four of them, valued at $14.99 apiece; a solar garden lamp valued at $3.50; two hanging lamps valued at $30 and a $15 frog with a lighted belly, three complainants reported today.

*In a continuing dispute over a dog on Addison Lane, one neighbor was advised not to brandish his gun and to only yell at the other from the street.

*On Taurus Lane a man said his ex-roommate left with some of his belongings
