Tales from the Police Blotter

* * *

Wednesday, Jan. 18

*Checking with a home owner after an intrusion alarm sounded at a Caves Hwy. residence at 1:17 a.m., a deputy determined that all was “Code 4” (OK).

*On Wells Drive, a van with California license plates, parked so as to obstruct the sidewalk, was deemed a hazard and towed.

*Just before noon a “road rage incident” was logged for patrol info.

*During the past several days a resident on Lamont Way noted that someone attempted to enter a cabin and tore a screen from a chicken coop, causing an estimated $45 damage.

*A 17-year-old girl was listed as a runaway person at 5:14 p.m.

*Shawna E. Turkins, 28, was cited on a charge of violation of the basic rule (VBR: driving faster than conditions warrant) in the 100 block of S. Redwood Hwy. at quarter to 7 p.m.

*In the vicinity of Holland Loop and Takilma Road a man was reportedly hitting a woman and several children. But no one and no vehicle matching the given description was located when a deputy responded.

*People who had been evicted from a residence in the 29000 block of Redwood Hwy. were back on the property, and the owner wanted a deputy to respond. They were there to retrieve some belongings.

*A deputy on patrol was made aware that a caller in the 7000 block of Takilma Road heard two shots from what may have been a handgun at 9:50 p.m., and “was afraid.”

Thursday, Jan. 19

*A small, light-colored vehicle was seen racing around the vicinity of E. River Street and Old Stage Road all night, a caller noted at 2:34 a.m.

*Lloyd Thomas Henry, 52, was cited on charges of driving with a suspended license (DWS), and warned for speeding, lack of a front license plate, and an obstructed windshield.

*Although it was said that a mother and son on Caves Hwy. had been involved in a verbal dispute and “going at it for days,” no evidence of such was discovered when a deputy checked.

*A homeless man said that some prescription medications had been taken from his pants pocket while he slept near the Siskiyou Community Health Center overnight.

*A 17-year-old run-away returned home, her mother reported.

*Some 5 1/2 hours after he first came into the Cave Junction Goodwill store and began looking at books, a man in a black jacket had worn out his welcome, but became belligerent when asked to leave, an employee reported.

*Eric Griffie, 35, was cited on a charge of possession of a controlled substance (PCS), marijuana, and lodged in Josephine County Jail.

*Served with warrants at the Illinois Valley Substation charging parole violation on an original charge of menacing, and failure to appear (FTA) on an original second-degree criminal mischief charge, Robert William Wendover, 27, was cited to appear.

Friday, Jan. 20

*Steven M. Biggs, 33, was cited on charges of DWS, driving while uninsured and violation of the open container law. He also was warned for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, and defective tail-lights.

*Community Oriented Policing (COP) patrols occurred here and there throughout the valley in the wee morning hours.

*Christopher J. Ray Burns, 28, was cited on a charge of DUII, and his vehicle was towed from the 32000 block of Redwood Hwy. at 2 a.m.

*Left in a ditch on Happy Camp Road for several days, a small light-colored vehicle was determined to belong to a 54-year-old man who hadn’t been seen since Tuesday.

*Somebody “keyed” a 2003 Buick, a caller reported, resulting in $1,000 damage.

*Though it had been reported that an 8-year-old girl had disappeared from a school bus stop on Thompson Creek Road sometime after 3 p.m., she was found after an exhaustive search at home -- hiding.

*No reason was discovered for an alarm which sounded in the safe area at the Selma Post Office at quarter to 5 p.m.

*Two vehicles parked at a residence in the 28000 block of Redwood Hwy. were damaged by vandals, a caller reported.

*Following a noninjury motor vehicle accident on a parking lot on Redwood Hwy. at Caves Avenue, the drivers took their OSP-provided incident numbers and insurance information, and drove away.

Saturday, Jan. 21

*Found stashed under some bushes off Eight Dollar Road, a stolen pickup truck from California was recovered minus its winch and radio at 3 p.m.

*On Eight Dollar Road at 3:42 p.m., David Wayne Scott, 51, was cited on a federal charge of firewood theft. Charges of DWS were referred to the county district attorney against Joshua D. Scott, 25.

*“Older, transient-looking” men had been seen rummaging around in a burned-out residence on W. River Street. They’d been seen there before, the caller said, leaving trash and removing items from the house.

*Linda June Salter, 58, was arrested on a warrant charging PCS (hashish and psilocybin mushrooms) and lodged in county jail.

*On Robinson Corner Road, a man said that he felt his neighbor across the creek was shooting a firearm to intimidate him.

*A counterfeit $10 bill was recovered at Shop Smart Food Warehouse.

Sunday, Jan. 22

*In violation of a restraining order, a woman contacted a man on McMullen Creek Road and left some 23 messages on his answering machine, he said.

*A man in a tan sweatshirt was seen darting in and out of traffic in Downtown CJ several times.

*On Queen of Bronze Road a man said that his neighbor was “ranting and raving,” upset possibly because he’d been asked to keep his dog on his own property.

*In the 23000 block of Redwood Hwy. a woman said her roommate had been harassing her and threatened to take her puppy away.

Monday, Jan. 23

*Though she had no proof her ex-husband was to blame, a woman said she suspected him of having scratched the tag off her car’s license plate three times.

*Two trees two to three feet in diameter were across the roadway and blocking traffic on Redwood Hwy. a a half-mile from the California border, a caller reported after noon.

*Due to a prior dispute over drugs, a man on Laurel Road said that he was considered a snitch, and two other men, who had beaten him up before, were threatening to kill him.

*On Queen of Bronze Road, a man said that his wooden address sign, “Thank You Jesus” sign, veterans sign and U.S. flag were taken down and left on the ground, possibly by a neighbor with whom he has a continuing dispute.

*Contacted among a group of transients loitering at Caves Minimall, Stephen E. Evans, 43, was cited to appear on warrants charging failure to appear on charges of contempt of court, DUII (three counts), resisting arrest, failure to perform the duties of a driver, and DWS.

*Craig Richard Holloway, 58, was cited on charges of DUII, DWS and refusing a breath test following a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident on Westside Road. He was lodged in Josephine County Jail on a charge of violating a restraining order.

*Not satisfied with how the school was handling the situation, a parent phoned to report that his child overheard another middle school student with whom he’s had numerous problems say that if he could he’d bring a knife to school and “stab this guy.”

Tuesday, Jan. 24

*Two vehicles struck a cow on Sauer’s Flat it was reported at 6:12 a.m.

*On Queen of Bronze Road a man reported that someone drove a wooden cross into the driveway in front of his gate which red, “What would Jesus shoot?”

*Neighbors on Cowboy Way and Queen of Bronze Road involved in a continuing dispute were advised by telephone to stay away from one another.

*One dozen homeless persons camped with their bicycles near Caves Pharmacy were making it difficult for patrons to enter businesses there.

*A 13-year-old Cave Junction girl was reported by her mother as a runaway.
