Tales from the Police Blotter

Thursday, Dec. 15

*Separated from her husband, a woman complained that he was taking mail from their shared Cave Junction mailbox. She was advised of her options.

*While attempting to take possession of a vehicle in the 17000 block of Redwood Hwy., a “repo man” encountered resistance, and the belligerent party threatened to loose the dogs on him. A civil compromise was reached.

*Charles Perry Case, 67, was cited on a charge of speeding on Redwood Hwy. at Eight Dollar Mountain Road at 11 a.m.

*Robert James Harrison, 37, was cited on a charge of driving while suspended (DWS), and warned about a defective taillight and expired tags on Rockydale Road at quarter to noon. He and his passenger were advised to find an alternate way home, and the vehicle was left behind.

*Two students were said to have been in an altercation at Illinois Valley High School, but the aggressor fled before the deputy arrived, and the other did not wish to pursue charges.

*Elizabeth Matthews, 41, was cited at 1:10 p.m. on a charge of DWS, and her vehicle was towed from Downtown Cave Junction.

*Extra patrol occurred on BLM property on Westside Road near 5 p.m.

*A Happy Camp Road tenant received eviction issue advice around 9 p.m.

*Luey Magic Glenn, 16, was arrested on a warrant charging parole violation and transported to Josephine County Juvenile Justice Center in Grants Pass.

*On Dick George Road a woman said that someone entered a vacant residence, ransacked the building, tore up wood flooring, removed a heater and broke things. Also, VIN tags were stolen from one of her vehicles.

Friday, Dec. 16

*Flashlights could be seen just after midnight inside a Finch Road residence which was supposed to be empty. A witness then saw someone exit the back of the residence, carrying a suitcase. No one could be located, but a report of burglary was filed.

*In what turned out to be a civil matter pertaining to an easement issue, a woman on Crooks Creek Road said that her neighbor intentionally tried to run her vehicle off the road on her own driveway. The complaint was deemed unfounded.

*A residence on Caves Avenue appeared to have been burgled overnight, a man reported at 9:30 a.m.

*Some $1,500 damage occurred when, according to a witness, the driver of a small white pickup truck struck a bottle redemption machine at Selma Select Market at 10:15 a.m. The driver, who did not leave a name, was later contacted, and the matter is under investigation.

*Robin Rhodes Gasser, 39, was arrested with a BAC of 0.13, and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants.

*William A. Sampley, 58, was cited on charges of DWS and driving uninsured on S. Old Stage Road. His vehicle was impounded.

*Bruce Lyle Smith, 46, was arrested on a warrant charging contempt of court and lodged in Josephine County Jail after a complaint that he appeared to be stalking a woman on N. Redwood Hwy.

*Entering a locked Caves Avenue residence via a broken window, thieves took a television, DVD/VCR, two pieces of scrimshaw, various change and some prescription medications.

*Her boyfriend came home intoxicated and she wanted him to leave, said a woman on S. Old Stage Road. He agreed to spend the night someplace else and was given a ride there.

Saturday, Dec. 17

*A noisy guest at the Junction Inn advised that she had been yelling at her kids earlier, but that everything was OK at 12:30 a.m.

*Though a man on McMullen Creek Road believed that “at least” four men were standing around outside his residence with shotguns planning to kill him, no one could be located when a deputy checked. The deputy recommended a urine analysis for the complainant.

*Although he was seen intentionally running in front of vehicles on Redwood Hwy. in Downtown Cave Junction, a 30-odd-year-old transient was not located when a deputy checked around 10:30 a.m.

*On Old Stage Road and E. River Street, an “Stop” sign was down, causing a traffic hazard.

*Two porch lights valued at $40 apiece were broken, and the glass globe from a parking lot light stolen overnight, said an apartment manager on W. Lister Street.

*People in camouflage clothing were on his roof, and they were there to kill him, said a man on McMullen Creek Road. No deputies would respond this time, as the complainant appeared to be suffering from “meth issues.”

*A group of students enjoying movie night at IVHS inadvertently set off a motion alarm in the counseling center at 4:43 p.m.

*A mother on S. Junction Avenue said that her son was beyond her control, was not attending school and was disrespectful. She was advised of her options.

*Heard but not seen, someone was believed to be speeding in and out of traffic, revving the engine and burning rubber in and around Schumacher Street and S. Sawyer Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 18

*Some 30 tires were dumped on what may be U.S. Forest Service land off Lone Mountain Road, a caller reported. He believed that the dumper was driving a Ford pickup truck.

*Suspicious, early morning activity near a rock quarry several miles up Deer Creek Road prompted a call from a resident who also mentioned the presence of some kind and quantity of chemicals at that location.

Monday, Dec. 19

*A digital camera, memory cards and case -- in total valued at $400 -- were removed from a McMullen Creek Road residence sometime in the preceding three weeks, it was reported.

*Some really clever person phoned 911 from a public telephone at Illinois Valley High School at 7 p.m. and then disconnected the line.

Tuesday, Dec. 20

*Found outside the sliding back door of a residence on S. Old Stage Road at 1:41 a.m., an intoxicated man was held at gunpoint by one resident until a deputy arrived. The man said he was only looking for a place to sleep, and was transported to his own home.

*It was believed that the people who smashed a window at Donary’s Pizza & Mary’s Mini-Mart in Selma may have been attempting to burgle the place, but left with nothing after causing an estimated $500 damage.

*On Rockydale at Waldo Road, a “Stop” sign was down, and county public works was notified.

*Six large, black garbage bags filled with women’s clothing were dumped at a property on Deer Creek Road. The complainant was advised that the sheriff’s office lacked resources to seize the items.

*Somebody stole a mailbox and post valued at $100 from a residence on Westside Road.
